Nose Jammer Field Spray contains Vanillin and other natural aromatic compounds derived from lignin, the structural compound found in all trees, grasses, and shrubs. When applied, the spray creates a concentrated cloud of these compounds around the hunter. Because Vanillin and related aromatic molecules exist naturally in the woods, game animals are not alarmed by them. At high concentrations, however, these compounds overload the olfactory gland in the animal's nose, making it impossible to distinguish or process other odor molecules including human scent. The effect is olfactory overload rather than odor elimination.
