How Deer React to Nose Jammer

As we use Nose Jammer and our field staff reports filter in, we are learning more and more about the product. What we are seeing when you use Nose Jammer is the deer are going to react one of 3 ways. We theorize it has to do with the individual deer and their nasal sensitivity.

The first reaction is no reaction at all. The deer get a snoot full and act as if nothing has happened. This is the most common reaction and the one we want, but is not always the case. Used properly this is how most deer react.

The second reaction is the deer throwing its nose in the air trying to get it back online. They will also search visually for something different in the area. Approximately two in 10 deer will act like this. Their sense of smell has been disrupted, and they are confused but continue about their business, occasionally lifting their head in an effort to test the breeze.

The third reaction is where a deer will actually stomp and blow. About one in 30 deer will act this way. These deer are a little more high strung than most. Their ability to use their nose to detect human odor has been disabled, and they dont know why they are not smelling as well as they did before. You may think that they have winded you, but after you become familiar with the reaction, you will observe that a large percentage of these deer will actually resume their original path and offer a shot opportunity. It is easier to observe this reaction with bucks because of their identifiable head gear, but we have had mature does stomp and blow at us only to track around and be in front of us 30 minutes to an hour later. Their confused reaction fades and they continue about their day, especially if they can see other deer behaving calmly.  The deer don't associate being jammed with human presence because they don’t detect human odor.
